Hon. Janet Museveni, the Minister of Education and Sports has called for an emergency meeting about reopening of medical schools. According to information reaching our news desk, the meeting is scheduled to go down tomorrow, Wednesday 4th at State House.
It should be recalled that President Museveni on Friday directed the Ministry of Education, National Council for Higher Education and Ministry of Health to meet and plan for the possibility of reopening for medical students.
While speaking to KFM, a local radio station, Ismail Mulindwa, the Director of Basic and Secondary Education yesterday confirmed the meeting. The Minister is expected to notify the public about the outcomes from the meeting ahead of planned reopening of medical schools.
Prof Mary Okwakol , the Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) also confirmed the meeting before explaining that it will decide when and how the government will allow medical students resume studies.
All learning institutions were ordered to close in June following a spike in COVID-19 cases as well as deaths. In 2020, the government first reopened Universities and Tertiary Institutions teaching health courses in September after the first closure of schools in March 2020.
According to Presdient Museveni, medical students can easily adhere to COVID-19 SOPs since they are the future health/medical practitioners.
We will keep you posted!
