A Senior Four candidate at Kilembe Secondary School in Kasese District has drowned in River Nyamwamba on the day he was due to sit his last Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) paper.
School authorities said Innocent Nowomugisha had left school with a classmate to play football in Kasese town. On their way back, the two tried to cross River Nyamwamba, and Nowomugisha was swept away by the strong current.
His body has since been recovered.
It was not immediately clear whether the classmate who was with him was hurt. CampusBee has contacted the school and police for more details.
River Nyamwamba, which flows down from the Rwenzori Mountains through Kasese, is known for its fast currents, especially after heavy rain.
Stay safe near water
With end-of-year exams under way and holidays approaching, students and parents are reminded to avoid crossing rivers on foot, particularly when water levels are high, and to use bridges or established crossings instead.
CampusBee extends its condolences to Nowomugisha’s family, classmates and the Kilembe Secondary School community.
