A few weeks ago, Makerere University students staged a strike against the 15% tuition increment policy and many were beaten, arrested and others suspended from the university.
Residents of Lumumba hall can’t forget the day when the army together with the police broke into their rooms beating them and destroying their property in that very night.
Among those students whose property was destroyed by security personel, twenty one of them received a smile again after President Museveni’s brother Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho aka Salim Saleh compensated their lost property.
The affected students who were led by Mr Nsamba Patrick the GRC of Lumumba hall who is also the Guild Finance Minister met Gen Saleh at his home in Kapeeka Nakaseke and he gave them 21 Million Uganda shillings as a compensation for their property. He condemned the act of brutality by military and other sister security bodies and sympathized with the affected students.
The following are some of the students who were compensated
Derrick Ndyamuhaki, Albert Lotyang, Patrick Nsamba, Emmanuel Cherotich, Patrick Ssenyonjo, Ivan Kanabo, James Ssebidde, Nelson Mugisha, Joseph Owomugisha, Elvis Omoit, Joseph Marta Muzinda, Philip Winner Byonaniwe, Godfrey Kamukama, Micheal Tayebwa, Arnold Arinaitwe, Nicholas Kwesiga, Joseph Mukamba, Alfred Taremwa, Micheal Maganda, Tadeo Nyakoojo, Abiney Kitooke and Ivan Oyesigye.
However other students related this compesation to politics. “I don’t want to believe Gen Saleh is trying to buy off the students but maybe that is also another thing that we should be debating about because that compensation was not publicized. They would have come to Lumumba and say it openly.” said by David Nyanzi a Law student at Makerere.
Lawel Muhwezi Joshua the Guild Minister of information encouraged all those who lost their property to receive the compensation but he said that their demands still counts and they won’t be divided by the tricks from the university top officials using their fellow students.
