The incidents that happened following last week’s strike against tuition policy at Kyambogo University have left Abraham Tumusiime in tears, pain and disability. Tumusiime, a second-year student pursuing a Diploma in Automotive and Power Engineering at the Banda-based university lost his hand last week in what police termed as an attempt to throw back a teargas canister to police officers who were deployed to curb down the rowdy students.
Tumusiime has revealed that he is worried about his future as the incident could affect his ability to resume school, explaining that being an engineering student, he will need both of his hands. He adds that he is feeling a lot of pain, and emotional trauma after the incident.
The traumatized student got his whole hand cut off during a surgical operation at St. Francis Hospital, Nsambya after doctors failed to come up with an another alternative to save his badly crushed right hand.
The unfortunate event happened when Tumusiime and other Kyambogo students were striking last Thursday against the newly introduced 12-week tuition policy that requires all students to clear their payments within the first 12 weeks of the semester or be forced to take a dead year.
The strike was followed by an emergency meeting between students’ leaders and the administration where they agreed to relax the policy for this semester.
