The recess term at Makerere that is meant to help students in the Sciences resourcefully gain up on the syllabus to complete it in time is being used for other purposes, our reporters can confirm.
While on a fact finding mission in Kikoni, a private residential area of Makerere University students, we were shocked to unveil details of students on recess term and internship alike who have resorted to sex instead of concentrating.
Alex, not real name, a resident at Douglas Villa is a third year student supposed to be interning every weekday but he reports to intern only on Monday and Thursday. The rest of the days, he told us, “are for catching up on the sex plans he has with female scholars around Kikoni.”
Asked how he will be able to fill his internship logbook if he doesn’t have work for the other days, Alex said there are friends who go to intern everyday and he will copy from their logbooks.
He was not worried that his academic supervisor may show up at work while he is not there. His intern supervisor, according to him, doesn’t even know where he is interning from so she has to call him before he gets there.
Alex, is not the only one. Our snoops have also unearthed a group of female recess students (from a hostel that we have withheld) who spend the greater part of their evenings drinking alcohol and smoking weed in the company of male counterparts. We are told that they bribe hostel askaris who let them take in the illicit drinks that otherwise would not be allowed in hostels.
When their colleagues are assigned to the field, this particular group of girls are either absent or seated out the whole time while their colleagues are working. “It is so visible, we are working but these girls – who all stay in the same hostel are dozing as early as 8am” a disturbed Tom from Mitchell told our snoops. “We started asking questions”, he said.
