Soroti University has commissioned its long-awaited main gate, a Shs1.2 billion facility with security and access-control systems meant to improve safety and movement at the institution.
The gate was commissioned on Friday, September 25, 2026. I couldn’t open the X post you shared because the platform blocks automated access, so this article is built from New Vision, Nile Post and the university’s own website.
What the Project Includes
The gate has a 60-metre wall fence, a security house with a detention room, 13 CCTV cameras, solar power systems, monitoring screens, computers, walkways, gate-control facilities and provisions for persons with disabilities. The university says the guardroom, the 24-hour surveillance, an independent solar system and dedicated telephone facilities are part of the package.
Eng. Paul Anguria, the university’s Deputy Chief Estates Officer, said the project was meant to create a modern, secure and functional entrance with controlled access for vehicles and pedestrians, while also adding to the university’s architectural identity.
The National Housing and Construction Company Limited (NHCC) executed the project, with works running from September 28, 2025 to May 15, 2026. It was funded by the Government of Uganda. The job was first meant to take six months, but the university said election-related issues caused delays and an extension.
Anguria said about Shs1.1 billion has been paid, with the balance due once the contractor fixes identified defects. The handover also starts a six-month defects liability period. NHCC Deputy CEO for Finance and Administration Derek Mutegich said the project was completed within budget and on schedule.
Vice Chancellor Prof. John Robert Ikoja Odongo said the long wait to open the gate had nearly caused unrest among students. He added that the only missing component is a holding area for impounded vehicles.
To manage wear and tear, he proposed charging vehicles that enter the university Shs5,000, except university and Government vehicles.
The gate comes as the growing university plans major investments in student accommodation, teaching facilities, a hospital and engineering education.
