A group of concerned student activists under their umbrella association Students’ Activism Forum Uganda (SAFU) has lodged a formal petition before the Parliament of Uganda against the recent Uganda Christian University’s ban of non-Anglican forms of worship within the campus.
On June 16, Campus Bee reported that Rev. Canon John Ssenyonyi, the Vice Chancellor of the Mukono-based University, had banned non-Anglicans from practicing their religions anywhere on the campus premises.
Through their Chairperson Mr. Byansi Henry who also doubles as the Nkumba University Guild President, the students’ rights’ activists delivered the petition challenging Dr. Ssenyonyi’s ban to the Clerk at Parliament yesterday afternoon.
The student-activists aver in their petition that the ban “disproportionately impinges on the fundamental constitutional rights” of the non-Anglican students at UCU which include the freedom of worship, freedom from discrimination and the freedom of expression, among others.
According to Mr. Byansi, the ban “is unacceptable and unjustifiable in a free and democratic society. It is not only outrageous in its defiance of simple logic but also anti-progressive as it hinders the break from Uganda’s past that was characterized by oppression and arbitrary exercise of powers”.
To that end, SAFU demands in its petition that the proprietors of UCU be summoned to justify the ban and show cause why it should not be rescinded.
