A distressing suicide note from a medical student at Kampala International University (KIU) has ignited a fierce debate over the university’s administration and the conditions faced by its students. The note, addressed to the student’s mother, sheds light on the deep-seated frustrations and challenges within the institution.

The Suicide Note:

TO MY Mum,

I am a medical student of Kampala International University – the worst medical school you can ever think about.

I have made a decision to end my life as the only solution to all the regrets, rejections, and problems I am facing.

Decisions made in KIU have made me lose hope, and I regret joining it. I have lost interest in all the dreams I had in life.

I joined medical school to make my mum proud. I have done my very best. I have been a disciplined and excelling student.

KIU has constantly frustrated my dream. A course of 5 years takes a minimum of 7-10 years on normal progress.

A disorganized medical school sends students to teaching sites, then tells us to shift from referral hospitals to health center IVs midway through the semester, and parents have to foot the costs of these illogical decisions because of their reckless admissions.

Administrators are arrogant when approached about these illogical decisions.

Mum, I am not a crook, a liar, or a thief. This disorganized medical school has made me look like a failure in front of you. I would have never wished you to abandon me at this moment.

Another Medical Student’s Perspective:

The suicide note has resonated with many current and former students, who have voiced similar grievances. One student shared their thoughts, highlighting the systemic issues at KIU:

“Man, thank you for creating awareness about the rotten system at KIU. These people’s main goal is to frustrate us day and night, and we need to expose their rotten systems.

A course that is supposed to be five years, they have made us study for 6.5 years. As a result, our colleagues in other universities will go for internships a whole year before us. By prolonging our semesters for no reason at all, they are costing us time, career paths, and our parents’ hard-earned money!

When you try to bring up your concerns, they rubbish it and even call you ‘foolish,’ as though their university would survive without students!

I cannot recommend that university honestly.

Every semester, because of their fake policies, at least two students commit suicide. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!”

A Different View from an Alumnus:

However, not all voices agree with the harsh criticism. Kisakye Jesse, a former KIU medical student, offered a different perspective:

“Future Is Global” Lecture at Kyambogo University Calls for Radical Rethink of Global Academic Partnerships

“I’m an old student of KIU medical school, but my story differs from the confessor(s). Medical school is generally full of hardships and expenses at large, either academic/progression issues or tuition.

I find it not right to rubbish or tarnish the name of our university.”

The note has triggered calls for an investigation into KIU’s administrative practices and student welfare. Many are urging the university to address the grievances raised by students and to reform policies that are seen as detrimental to their academic and personal well-being.

KIU is yet to issue a statement on the matter.
