The situation at Makerere University remains intense and police this morning and afternoon are engaged in running battles with Makerere University students who are demonstrating after their colleagues were arrested on Monday for leading a strike.
At least six Makerere University students, including the guild president, Papa Were Salim, were arrested over protests at the main campus in Kampala.
Police is currently firing teargas in halls of residence to disperse students that are demanding for the release of their colleagues. The affected halls are mainly Mitchell and Nkrumah.
“We are going to file a law suit against Police for firing expired teargas in all halls of residence. This kind of impunity shall not be entertained at Makerere University. This is not Kasangati,” a Mitchell Hall resident cried out with the pain of teargas in his eyes.
The students are saying that they will not relent until their arrested colleagues are released from Wandegeya Police station.
The students were arrested Monday morning by Police during clashes following a protest they had staged over increased tuition fees and missing marks.
The group was also protesting scrapping of hall meals, evening lectures, end of semester exams and sponsorship of students on national merit.
Amid heavy police deployment at the campus, the students staged a demonstration over what they have called “unfair administrative policies”.
