The Creator of Mobile Money Has Passed On: A Tribute to Richard Obore, the Man Many Never Knew

Tributes are pouring in following the death of Richard Obore, popularly known as Richie K, a Ugandan technology innovator and computer scientist whom close friends and colleagues credit as one of the early minds behind the concept that later evolved into Mobile Money.

Obore’s passing has sparked renewed conversation within Uganda’s technology and innovation circles, with those who worked closely with him describing him as a brilliant yet self-effacing thinker whose ideas were ahead of their time.

According to long-time associates, Obore conceptualised and discussed mobile-based financial transaction systems years before they became mainstream. However, due to his trusting nature and the informal environment in which many early tech ideas were shared, his contribution was never formally recognised or commercialised under his name. Friends say he lived to see the concept gain global adoption through corporate platforms, but without public credit.

Obore’s journey in technology began early. He attended Nakasero Primary School in the early 1990s before later enrolling at Makerere University, where he studied Computer Science. It was during his university years that he deepened his engagement with software development, systems thinking, and emerging digital solutions.

Beyond his intellectual ability, Obore was widely remembered for his generosity, sociability, and loyalty to friends. Those who knew him described him as the centre of many social circles, known for his laughter, animated debates, and willingness to support others, often at personal cost.

“Richard was one of the most brilliant and selfless people I have ever known,” said a close friend, adding that Obore was always ready to help, whether through mentorship, collaboration, or financial support when needed.

His death comes as a significant emotional blow to those who shared both personal and professional journeys with him, particularly within Uganda’s early tech community.

As Uganda continues to celebrate the success of Mobile Money as one of its most transformative financial innovations, Obore’s passing has reopened discussions about the many unrecognised innovators whose ideas helped shape the digital economy.

Funeral arrangements and official statements from family members were yet to be announced by the time of publication.
