Makerere University administration has finally spoken out on the recent wave of student’s strikes and protests at the University. The administration passed out a stern warning and distanced itself from increasing tuition fees as alleged by the students.
Through their official social media handles, the university issued out a stern warning to the parties involved in the strikes citing that any return of hooliganism at the university will not be tolerated. Earlier on, the university students had been striking on the alleged 15% increment of fees that led to suspension of the top strikes masters at the campus.
Here is the full statement from the university.
“For two days, a group of MAK students has been leading a mini demonstration on campus, claiming they are protesting against non-existent fees increment. Apparently, strategizing themselves for next guild elections.
Management wishes to warn all those errant students that return to hooliganism at Makerere will not be tolerated and they should concentrate on their studies. Management wishes to inform the public that there has been no increment in fees for any student at Makerere. Every student joins the university with a fees structure and continues with that fees structure until they complete.
The management thus wishes to state it clearly that there has been no fees increment at Makerere University this academic year.”
These statements come at the heat of yesterday’s students mass strikes that left about 34 students arrested while a one Siperia Molly, a guild representative beaten and left unconscious by unknown people. She’s currently admitted in unstable condition at the university hospital.
What is true however, is that Makerere University increases fees by 15% every year and will do so for the next five years. The increments affect only the first year students of that year and in 5 years, a student joining Makerere University will be paying 75% m ore of what was paid before the increments started.
