With Uganda Christian University (UCU) organizing to graduate this week, two of those will, unfortunately, be students that are deceased. These are Julius Akugizibwe (Bachelor of Education) and Victoria Nakimuli (Bachelor of Laws).
Mr Julius Akugizibwe died in an accident in January this year shortly after finishing his final examinations while Ms Victoria Nakimuli who will graduate with a first class degree passed away in Nakasero Hospital after being found lying on her bathroom floor, unconscious. She had been suffering from malaria and typhoid, coupled with dissertation stress at the time of her death.
The Senate reached the decision to graduate Nakimuli during their sitting of Saturday, June 23, 2018. Dr Anthony Kakooza, the Dean, Faculty of Law, said, as a faculty, they are pleased that the Senate took that decision. “We are very happy about it as a faculty, the fact that she has been one of the top performing students,” Dr Kakooza said.
This Friday, UCU is set to graduate over 1,024. Of those, 554 (54%) are female and 470 (46%) are males. 31 students will graduate with first class degrees at a ceremony scheduled to take place at the University’s main campus in Mukono. The graduation ceremony will be graced by Prof. Ezra Suruma, the Chancellor Makerere University. It should also be noted that the graduands will walk away with their transcripts on graduation day contrary to previous times when they had to go back after a few months to pick them.
