UCC Publishes Courier and Pay TV Price Guide

A new UCC guide reveals eye-opening price gaps between courier companies delivering across Uganda — and students are among those paying the price

If you’ve ever needed to send documents home for a signature, ship a laptop for repair, or receive a package from a relative upcountry, you’ve probably just picked the most familiar courier name and paid whatever they quoted. According to a March 2026 consumer pricing guide published by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), that habit could be costing you significantly more than necessary.

The guide — titled Know Your Rates: A Consumer Guide to Pay TV, Post and Courier Pricing — compiles officially licensed rates from over 20 courier operators across Uganda, and the numbers tell a story that every campus student should read carefully

Take a standard delivery of under 1kg from Kampala to Gulu — a route many northern Uganda students know well. The guide shows that Dafric charges just UGX 3,000 for that delivery. Hesed Holdings charges UGX 9,500. Mash Bus Services charges UGX 21,240. And Sail Courier quotes UGX 37,830 for the exact same route.

That is a gap of over UGX 34,000 for the same package to the same destination — a difference that matters enormously to a student on a tight budget.

The cheapest average cost for a Kampala CBD delivery is UGX 6,995, but individual operators range from as low as UGX 2,000 (eBee Mobility) to UGX 36,000 (SafeBoda Technologies) — an 18x price difference in the same city.

For students from Uganda’s more remote districts, delivery costs spike sharply. Sending a package to Kotido costs an average of UGX 31,273, with Hesed Holdings quoting as high as UGX 60,000 — nearly ten times the cost of the same-weight delivery within Kampala.

Koboko averages UGX 27,098, Yumbe averages UGX 28,176, and Kalangala — accessible mainly by ferry — averages UGX 30,043, with one provider quoting UGX 75,000 for that island district.

The geographic inequality is stark: a student in Kampala can send a package across the city for as little as UGX 2,000. A student trying to send the same package to a relative in Nakapiripirit pays an average of over UGX 31,000.

For students with family abroad or those involved in research collaborations, international courier costs listed in the guide should be noted carefully. Sending a package under 1kg to the United Kingdom costs between UGX 125,500 (EMS Posta Uganda) and UGX 477,000 (Aramex) — a difference of over UGX 350,000.

Shipping to India ranges from UGX 149,549 (EHS Logistics) to UGX 465,668 (DHL) — yet both are going to the same country.

For East African regional deliveries, Kenya is the most competitive route, averaging UGX 98,239, with Dafric quoting as low as UGX 20,000. South Sudan is the most expensive regional destination, averaging UGX 319,700.

Beyond courier services, the guide also covers Pay TV subscriptions — relevant for students in hostels or shared apartments who contribute to a monthly subscription.

DStv remains the most expensive option by a wide margin. Its Premium package at UGX 320,000 per month offers 165 channels — but only 15 are local. Meanwhile, Azam’s top package (Azam Play, 151 channels) costs just UGX 45,000, and StarSat’s DTH Super (128 channels) goes for UGX 60,000.

For budget-conscious viewers, Azam Pure at UGX 13,000 per month or its weekly option at UGX 5,000 offers 104 channels — making it one of the most affordable formal Pay TV options on the market.

GoTV Lite, at UGX 15,000 monthly, offers 10 channels — meaning viewers pay UGX 1,500 per channel. By contrast, Azam Play at UGX 45,000 across 151 channels works out to roughly UGX 298 per channel — more than five times the value.
