Students of Uganda Christian University (UCU) have always complained about the requirement of the university to have them pay a certain amount of money in order to be registered.
Some students who were stranded with these sums either paid their tuition very late, or failed, making them get automatic dead years for failure to clear their tuition.
The tuition policy of the university does not allow students who have not paid their half or full tuition to register. The students of UCU have to register within the first two weeks of the semester, the second week being the date for late registration where students will be required to have paid at least 50% of their tuition according to the now old policy.
This tuition policy has been adjusted to somewhat cater for the growing concerns of the students. Speaking during the Community Worship on Thursday, last week, Benon Musinguzi, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics (DVC), informed the congregation that the policy has been adjusted.
He said that instead of the students being required to have paid 50% by the 2nd week of the semester, they have now been allowed to pay 45% of the tuition and will still be registered. By the 8th week, of the semester, the students were required to have paid the remaining balance, 100% of their fees at a period the university calls “the mid semester.”
The adjustments that were communicated now indicate that the students are required to have paid 75% instead of 100% by the 8th week, and the remaining percentage to make a 100 by the 10th week of the semester and not pay fines for late payment.
The periods for paying fines have also been adjusted. The new policy now mentions that the students will be paying a fine of UGX. 50,000 for late payment only after the 10th week and that no payments for tuition will be allowed after the 12th week.
Congregants were very impressed by the new tuition developments that the DVC, Musinguzi asked the students to clap after his communication to welcome the new policy.
