The class leader was arrested after she protested against the administration of the university and the current guild regime and also demanding immediate satisfaction of the mandate that was promised during elections.
She was carrying a placard bearing the words below, the theme of her protest.
Alice Chelengat, a second year law student and a class leader of her class at Ugandan Christian University, Mukono, was on Tuesday last week arrested and taken to Butabika hospital.
“Revive and Renew the Uni UCU, Advocate for decent dressing, Preach water and drink water, not wine, Improve church attendance/community worship, Seek justice for all the victims, not the culprits, Stick to your promises (Guild government), Advocate for exemplary leadership, Call for transparency and accountability from top leadership, guild and student body, Denounce violence and seek justice for all.”
She was up in arms, walking around the university in protest barefoot, raising her manilla paper. She was later arrested from the university dining hall, and loaded into the new university ambulance and taken to UCU police cells. It was after this that she was referred to Butabika for immediate attention.
To date, there has not been any news regarding Alice, and it is not yet certain when she would be returning to campus to proceed with her studies.
To give a perspective, Chelengat is a very vocal student at the university whose advocacy was noticed even at the first day she stepped into the university in first year. She is also known to wear extremely long dresses and skirts that almost reach her ankles explaining the reason she is demanding for decent dressing at the Mukono based campus.
