Following the Accreditation of Uganda Christian University’s medical programmes by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), the university began by admitting 62 pioneer students for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Dental Surgery courses.
However, word reaching Campus Bee indicates the newly launched medical school is not yet fully equipped for proper training of its medical students.
According to the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda His Grace Stanley Ntagali, who also doubles as the University Chancellor, the medical school needs financial support, which is one of the reasons why the Church of Uganda is dedicating September 30, 2018, as a special Sunday, where all church collections will be remitted to support the newly launched medical school.
While speaking to journalists at his office based in Namirembe, the Archbishop revealed that establishing and running a medical school is an expensive venture yet there is a need to train health workers who will attend to patients in Church-based health facilities and many hospitals across the country.
According to Michael Mubangizi, the University’s PRO, the needed funds will help in the installation of more laboratory equipment in the medical school to offer a better learning environment for the pioneer students and the future students to come.
Ntagali added that a portion of the funds will be given to the University’s regional colleges of Bishop Barham University College- Kabale, Arua campus and UCU Mbale University College.
Over 90% of the 85 million Shillings funds collected in last year’s special Sunday were used to establish the Mengo-based medical school.
