The Ugandan Association emerged the overall winner of this year’s annual Cultural Gala of the International University East Africa (IUEA) in an event that was attended by scores of students and the community of Kansanga. The event took place on the 26th and 27th April (last week).
The cultural event that was organised by the university guild under the ministry of gender and culture and the minister of social activities took place for two days on Thursday and Friday with the students of different groups showcasing varied backgrounds.
The theme for the event was “My Country, My Heritage, My Pride” from which students who represented 9 countries including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, India, Nigeria, Somalia, DRC congo, and Tanzania competed.
On Thursday, the activities included food, poem and skit. The activities started from 3 pm in the afternoon.
The activities on Friday included cultural dance, fashion and folk song.
It was the Tanzania cultural dance that fascinated onlookers the most as the dancers groped both fellow dancers and the floor and twerked and whined their waists in sync with the very traditional drum beats.
Towards the end last day of the two day’s event, awards were given for the performances of the different associations.
The competitions were highly competitive with close points range between the sides.
The Ugandan association received the award for the best food that comprised the traditional luwombo, matooke, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and fruits among others and the best poem while Rwanda took the award for the best short skit.
The folksong was taken by the Uganda and Burundi associations that tied in the position. Burundi also took the best cultural dance award and the best fashion went to the Somalian Association.
The overall winner of the event was the Ugandan association, which was followed by Burundi, and then the Rwanda association.
“The event was very colorful and the turn up was huge” says Alice Barlow, the Minister for gender and culture.
“People enjoyed the show,” she added.
