After several months of closure, Institutions of higher learning will reopen next week for physical studies.
However, this comes at a time the country is perplexed by explosion attacks targeting crowds. Universities are potential targets for terror attacks given the high number of students hence need to lace up security at these learning centers.
This this week, Makerere, Kyambogo and Makerere University Business school-MUBS have had security officers casually checking people and motor vehicles entering the university. This followed the recent bomb incidents at Komamboga and Masaka road.
On Tuesday, Makerere University closed both the Eastern and Western gates plus all the entry points used by students except the university’s main gate. The gate is apparently manned by armed military policemen who thoroughly checked vehicles and pedestrians accessing the university.
In addition, there is a police van was also seen patrolling different parts of the university, while at Freedom Square, there was deployment of policemen.
At Kyambogo University, our drones zoomed in to witness high level security checks at the main entrance in Banda. The police asked the motorists entering the university to not only open their car doors but also the boot before continuing to the parking lot. The pedestrians were asked for their identifications and were told to walk through the metal detector.
Reuben Twinomujuni, the Senior Public Relations Officer at Kyambogo University says that given the number of students there, security will remain heightened.
At Makerere University Business School (MUBS), the officers thoroughly check vehicles entering into the den of “slayers.”
Uganda Christian University and Ndejje University have reportedly beefed up their security checks at entry points and cautioned their community members as well.
