The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has agreed to upgrade Uganda Christian University Bishop Tucker road. This is the road that starts from the Bishop Tucker stage to Bugujju trading centre.
This upgrade comes shortly after the Vice Chancellor, Dr John Senyonyi addressed the issue to UNRA’s Director Allen Kagina regarding the murram on June 27,2015.
The 2km road which runs from Bishop Stage in Mukono town to Bugujju trading centre is mainly used by students and also accessible to other members of the public. At the moment, it is in an alarming state.
The UNRA Director, Kagina promised to put the road work request in to consideration though it won’t be started immediately.
At the moment UNRA has already secured Shs12m for materials to fix potholes and any other minor repairs on the road. Although it is not yet clear as to when repairs would begin on the 8-meter-wide road, no properties or persons would be affected by this project.
The road will be worked on in three phases, starting with filling of potholes. Later, the road will be widened by a one-meter shoulder on either side, to make a nine-meter-wide paved road.
The Authority in future also plans on widening the road further by having a paved carriage way of eight meters, and a road reserve of up to 15 meters from the centre.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Development and External Relations, David Mugawe has said that in the future, there are plans to widen the road further by having a paved carriage way of eight meters, shoulders and a road reserve totaling to 15 meters from the center.
Mr Mugawe also suggests that during the process of the road upgrade, UNRA should at least find another point outside Mukono town where traffic could be directed into the main Jinja highway.
At the moment, a technical team from UNRA is already surveying the road and details will be released to the community members that will be affected by the road works.
