Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) General Secretary who doubles as the Vice President and head of Ugandan delegation to East Africa Students Union (EASU), a one Roy Rugumayo has come out to pledge support for the University students who are striking against the skyrocketing prices of goods.
According to Roy, many students are going to drop out of institutions of learning due to the high costs of living and education.
“When there are no interventions being done to cushion the Ugandans from the adverse effects of inflation and related challenges, what’s most definitely going to happen is nationwide unrest mostly inspired by desperation and unchecked poverty the beginning of which we witnessed yesterday,” he said in a tweet.
“Uganda National Students’ Association, understands the plight of our students & parents and we shall support them to express it in all and any ways,” Roy added.
Yesterday, Thursday 5th May 2022, about 38 University students from Makerere , Kyambogo and Makerere University Business School led by Musiri David – the head of Institutions at National Unity Platform (NUP), Mandwa Elijah the Kyambogo University NUP guild presidential flag bearer, Mucunguzi Aliphonse, a renown Kyambogo University student-activist and several others were protesting against the rising commodity prices in the country when about 15 of them were arrested.
These were held together in a metallic chain while fronting a protest dubbed ‘arrest prices’ with an intention of delivering a petition to parliament when police intercepted them and detained many of them.
We reached out to Roy to find out what kind of help UNSA was pledging for these students and he had this to say;
“We are engaging police for bond as we prepare for sureties in case they are taken to court.”
