Mitchellex Bans Guild President Kadondi Gracious From Mitchell Hall — Then Declares Official Opposition to Her Entire Government

The biggest solidarity on campus didn’t just reject the 92nd Guild Cabinet over exclusion. They went further — barring the Guild President, her ministers, and her entire entourage from setting foot in Mitchell and Complex Halls. The letter carries over 20 signatures.

Makerere University’s 92nd Guild Government is barely off the ground, and it is already facing the most direct institutional challenge a sitting guild president can receive on this campus.

In a bombshell letter dated May 4, 2026 — signed by over 20 Mitchell Hall leaders and community members, and now circulating widely across campus — Mitchellex, the solidarity of Mitchell Hall, has formally declared Guild President Kadondi Gracious persona non grata.

The language is unambiguous and the consequences promised are severe.

“The Mitchellex community unanimously declares HE Kadondi Gracious persona non grata, her cabinet and her entire entourage not to be seen in or around Mitchell and complex halls of residence, failure of which shall have dire and devastating consequences.”

The Guild President, her ministers, and everyone in her circle are formally unwelcome at what is widely regarded as Makerere’s most powerful and influential student residence block. This was not one person’s opinion. It was a collective, signed decision — dated May 1, 2026 — with signatures still accumulating.

The declaration, addressed to “the Entirety of the Makerere University gallantry” and filed under the heading “In Retribution to the Constitution of the Guild Cabinet,” traces its origins to a single, pointed grievance: not one Mitchellite or complexer was appointed to the 92nd Guild Cabinet.

“We would like to state that we are not part of the 92nd government and we shall not be bound of the decisions and considerations made thereof,” the letter reads. “This decision is premised on the fact that our solidarity is not considered as though its part of Makerere University — signified by the ministers appointed by the 92nd Guild President whereby none of them is a mitchellite or complexer by either residence or attachment.”

The solidarity says this exclusion is not just an oversight — it is a historical anomaly. “No students guild government in the recent past has been established and served successfully without a representative on cabinet from Mitchellex whether the solidarity supported that government or not,” the letter states.

40% of Makerere, Unrepresented

The numbers behind Mitchellex’s grievance are hard to dismiss. According to the solidarity, close to 40% of Makerere University’s 35,000 students are either Mitchellites or complexers — by residence or attachment. That is roughly 14,000 students with no seat at the cabinet table.

“For such a huge percentage not being represented on the cabinet leaves a lot of questions on the criteria used to choose a cabinet,” the letter reads. “Is it by the balance of power theory that enables an inclusive government to serve students interests — or is it by how easy it will be for a minister’s budget to be sliced and a good percentage of the same goes to the pockets of the president and her handlers?”

That last line goes beyond a procedural complaint. It is a direct suggestion that cabinet appointments may have been made based on loyalty and financial convenience rather than genuine representation.

One College Dominating the Cabinet

Mitchellex also widened its attack beyond their own exclusion, raising an allegation that will fuel significant campus debate — that a considerable percentage of the 92nd Cabinet ministers come from a single college: the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS).

“We further question the readiness of the 92nd government to serve students interests if its composition does not signify unity of all Makerere University students as a considerable percentage of the ministers is from one college (CHS),” the letter states.

A guild cabinet that over-represents one college while locking out the largest solidarity on campus is a structural problem — and Mitchellex is saying so loudly and on the record.

“The Official Opposition”

Mitchellex is not stopping at complaints. Through its representatives in the 92nd Guild Representative Council, the solidarity has formally declared itself the official opposition to the 92nd Government.

“We declare ourselves the official Opposition to this government as we shall be outing alternative options and approaches to matters that are beneficial to the students community and implement them with or without the 92nd government,” the letter reads.

That is a significant institutional move. It means Mitchellex intends to operate as a parallel student voice — proposing alternatives, advocating through the GRC, and holding the executive accountable from outside rather than within. Any legislation, policy, or announcement from the 92nd Government will now face structured pushback from the GRC bloc aligned with the oldest solidarity on campus.

The declaration’s closing section turns outward — addressing not just Mitchell Hall, but the entire Makerere student body. Mitchellex framed the cabinet exclusion as a symptom of deeper, ongoing failures in student governance.

“We call upon all gallant Makerereans to be vigilant because cabinet formulation is always the first measure as to if the government will work for the students or for their own selfish ends,” the letter reads.

The solidarity listed the live grievances it says every Makerere student should be holding the guild accountable on: increased administration interference in student politics, infringement on freedoms and the guild statute, hunger on campus, the tuition policy and surcharges, limited government allowances, and more.

“We ought to keep the students guild government in check because they are mandated to represent and fight for students,” it concludes.

Guild President Kadondi Gracious has not yet publicly responded to the declaration, the persona non grata ban, the official opposition status, or the allegation of CHUSS dominance in her cabinet. Her silence — or her response — will define the early character of her presidency.

The 92nd Government now faces its first real test, and it has nothing to do with tuition fees, academic policy, or the administration. It is about whether a president who has been formally banned from the largest hall on campus can govern 35,000 students effectively.

Mitchellex, the oldest, biggest, and most influential solidarity at Makerere, has drawn its line. With over 20 signatures on the letter and the weight of campus history behind them, they are not bluffing.

The next move belongs to Kadondi Gracious.
