In July, Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) launched a campaign that was aimed at providing mathematical sets to all candidates this year as we reported then. The association estimated a wholesome amount of UGX 3B to run the good cause. At the onset of the campaign, many stakeholders and students all over the country felt this was building castles in the air. “That is a lot of money it’s not achievable”, was one of the many pessimistic comments thrown at the body.
On Sunday, the team spent the day at Makerere University chapel doing a car wash together with selling items including shirts and stickers. By the end of the day, they had earned money enough to buy 266 sets making a total of 1932 sets. This follows the first offer made by the association worth 1666 mathematical sets.
“The education system is suffering very many problems. Some we can advocate for but others seem to take ages. Buying geometry sets seems to be minimal or even unnecessary to some people but to the students down there in Koboko, it means a lot. We have chosen to close our ears to all the pessimistic voices and push this.
We are going to do whatever it takes because it is necessary. This campaign will be a success and its outcomes will include improvement in the performance of the students in the forthcoming examinations this year and other years to come, ” said Jothan Burobuto the president of the association.
We are still going to have many activities. On Sunday we shall still be in Makerere at St. Augustine and St. Francis chapels doing a car wash and selling shirts and stickers. A collared shirt goes for UGX. 50,000 whereas the collarless one is at UGX. 20,000. We also have stickers showing one’s participation and these go for UGX.10,000. I call upon every one to come and support the good cause, “he further added.
