The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) on Saturday officially re-opened their Makerere University chapter after years of slumber.
The event which happened at the auditorium in the Pharmacy building, attracted several students and members of the UPC secretariat.
At the same function, the chapter chairman was elected and Isaac Ongom Ongom Adero, a third-year student of Law emerged winner with an overwhelming 34 votes out of the 46 that were cast.
Ongom, aspired to contest in the recently concluded guild elections but according to the electoral commission, he did not meet the required qualifications.
Ongom, a resident of Mitchel hall, completes the cycle of political party chairpersons at Makerere who are all incidentally law students.
He joins Simon Muhinda (third year Law) the NRM Chairman, Ronald Ainebyoona (second year Law) the FDC Chairman and Steven Nuwagira (second year Law) the UYD/DP Chairman.
UPC was a stronghold in Makerere University in 70’s and 80’s and boasts of among others former guild president Dr. Olara Otunnu.
“The message of UPC is engagement. This country has bled a lot and needs healing but you cannot achieve that without engagement through dialogue,” Sam Okai the UPC National Chairman said at the event.
Mr. Okai also presented a message from the UPC party president Hon. Jimmy Akena and provided shirts to all the 7 pioneer chapter executive members that were appointed by the incoming chairperson.
Mr. Akena expressed joy about what he termed as the “rebirth of the party” in the letter and emphasised that their aim is to engage professionals right from their incubation stages at the university into UPC ideologies so as to tap into them in the future.
