While addressing journalists yesterday morning at Dinnerz Café Wandegeya, the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) headed by its national president Winifred Nakandi unveiled their upcoming plans regarding the current education state in the country.
The association tackled on the recently issued report by the Makerere University visitation committee, whose resolutions have become a big topic in the country lately. Humphrey Ongwen, one of the members of the association who also doubles at the secretary for National affairs in UNSA has revealed that they are not going to accept the resolutions suggested in the report.
“The recommendations in that report especially on merging the universities in Uganda to have one public University… we are not going to allow it, we are going to unite as Ugandan students because we have seen it is going to ruin everything. So to answer your question that ‘in case it is put into consideration, we are not going to allow it,” Ongwen bitterly clarified.
The association also expressed their concern on the current high tuition fees in both Primary and Secondary schools something they think should be looked into. According to the association’s speaker Kasujja Imran, the money paid by a single secondary student in one term can pay for a complete course at Makerere University. “A student is paying 1.5 Million in secondary which is not paid by a law student in Makerere. The law course at Makerere is at 1.4 Million, so this warning is going direct to parliament, in two weeks, a document is coming to you,” Kasujja warned.
