Following a news article that appeared in The Daily Monitor last Friday 8th June 2018, Kampala International University immediately organized a press conference to shade light on a number of issues regarding the frequent visits by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and other education regulatory bodies.
In reference to the article headline “Gov’t Probs KIU Medical Students”, the University’s DVC research and innovation Prof George Nasinyama revealed that KIU has had a quite number of visitations most of which applaud the University’s education standards, “KIU has been regularly inspected over a period of time and all those regulatory bodies would like us to inform them on the training programmes that are being offered at KIU. In 2016 we had seven visitations, I don’t think there is a University or medical school in this country that has received that number of visitations, and for us we are happy about these visitations because they give us confidence that what we are doing is right,” Nasinyama clarified.
Nasinyama added that KIU’s chairman on the board of trustees recommended that visitations should be regular atleast every after on or two years. According to Nasinyama, these regulatory bodies not only visit KIU but all Universities in the country.
On the same note, KIU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Dr. Annette Kezaabu revealed that following recommendations from NCHE and other bodies, KIU decided to double what was requested, “When we came back on board with National Council, not only did we follow the minimum requirements of National Council to admit, we even put a higher level for ourselves as KIU because we were in the process of correction just like any other University. Where they were requiring two principles we even increased and made them four or five, why? because we wanted to exceed the expectations and correct the image that was being taited,” Dr. Kezaabu told the press last Friday.
Among the key issues for visiting KIU include; to find out whether it meets the minimum standards for admitting students, to check the student-lecturers ratio, human infrastructure, human resource facility among others.
Dr. Kezaabu added that she communicated with the registrar (Gov’t) and she was told that there is no government body investigating KIU, “I have this morning spoken to the registrar and the registrar said that ‘there is no government that has sent out any committee or any official to go and prob KIU, as far as we are concerned, you are compliant’,” Kezaabu explained.
Among the regulatory bodies that have visited KIU between 2015 to present include the East African Community Medical Council and Board, National Council for Higher Education, Uganda Nurses and Midwifery Council, the Parliamentary Committee on Health among others.
