Makerere University Business School (MUBS) students and alumni have asked Prof Baryamureeba to step down as Chairman Council within seven (7) days, Campus Bee reports.
Speaking to Campus Bee, various stakeholders in the Nakawa based campus while in a press conference Wednesday afternoon, expressed their disappointment with Prof Venansius Baryamureeba, the Mubs Council Chairman who recently went up in arms with Prof Balunywa. The battle lines were drawn between Prof Balunywa and Prof Baryamureeba recently. This battle has dominated headlines in the past days as it appears to even have President Museveni on different lanes with First Lady and Education minister Janet Museveni.
A May 28 letter by President Museveni, appeared to have ended the leadership impasse at Makerere University Business School (Mubs), with the Fountain of Honour directing the re-appointment of the Prof Wasswa Balunywa.“His institution has been free of strikes. I have never found him averse to advice the times I have interacted with him,” Museveni argued.
“I am writing to direct you to re-appoint Professor Wasswa Balunywa as the Principle of MUBS for another term on the expiry of this one. One of the obstacles that have wasted our time is a disoriented pro-imperialism academia.” he said. Ms Museveni had earlier written to the Education Service Commission to speed up the process of getting a replacement for Prof. Balunywa as the University principal.
The Guild President of the Business Institution, Mr. Ntende Julius told our reporter, “The Mubs students fraternity support the President’s directive to re-appoint Prof Balunywa for another four-year term. Mr Balunywa is a father figure of literally every student at the university and no one wants him gone. The students want that and I want that too.”
Mr. Kayongo Hillary, the Guild Speaker also voiced his support for the experienced academician who has been at realm of the Nakawa based Business School for 21 years. “He is a very humble man that even a first-year student can approach. He has drastically improved the infrastructure of the institution and every student is thankful for that. He also has a five-year plan to open more branches in Gulu, Entebbe and Fort Portal so as to increase access to business education. By opening these centres, he will lower the cost of accessing business education and create more entrepreneurs. Such a person is a jewel to this University and the country at large.”
Lilian Namaganda, the Guild Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs did not have kind words for Prof Baryamureeba. ”I am personally very disappointed in Prof Baryamureeba and what he wants to do to our great institution. For a person who even failed to run his own institute, how can you dictate on our affairs?
The university council, which he heads does not have powers to appoint staff at the rank of deputy principal and above because that is the mandate of the Education Service Commission which also recommends names to the appointing authority who is either the education minister or the president. We have given him seven days to step down as Council Chairman or else he will face our wrath. No one touches our darling Principal,” Namaganda charged.
