Kyambogo University has taken a practical step toward inclusive education, procuring a fleet of tricycles (tuk-tuks) to ease campus mobility for students with disabilities — a move the institution says reflects its commitment to equitable education for all.
The initiative was announced by Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka, who reaffirmed the university’s standing as a leader in providing education to differently abled learners in Uganda.
“Kyambogo University is the leading institution in providing education to people who are differently abled,” Prof. Katunguka said. “To ease transport, the university procured these vehicles to facilitate mobility of the affected students. We shall leave no one behind as we provide equitable education.”
Kyambogo University has long positioned itself at the forefront of inclusive education in Uganda, hosting a significant population of students with disabilities and running programmes tailored to special needs education. For many of these students, everyday campus movement — navigating long distances between lecture halls, halls of residence, and administrative offices — can be a daily challenge.
The newly procured tricycles are designed to address exactly that barrier, offering a reliable and accessible transport option that allows affected students to move around the sprawling campus with greater ease and dignity.
Students Welcome the Move
According to Prof. Katunguka, the initiative has been warmly received by the very students it is meant to serve.
“The students have appreciated this initiative,” he noted, signalling that the intervention is already making a tangible difference in their day-to-day university experience.
Why This Matters
Accessibility remains one of the biggest hurdles facing students with disabilities in Uganda’s higher education institutions, where infrastructure is often not designed with mobility challenges in mind. By investing directly in transport solutions, Kyambogo University is turning the principle of “leaving no one behind” into concrete action.
The gesture also sets a benchmark for other universities across the country, demonstrating that inclusive education goes beyond admission — it requires ongoing investment in the systems and support that allow every student to thrive.
For a campus that prides itself on inclusivity, the arrival of these tricycles is more than a transport upgrade. It is a statement of intent: that at Kyambogo, equitable education means removing barriers wherever they stand.
