In a letter dated 3rd April 2018, Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Council Chairperson Prof Venansius Baryamureeba has replied to the Makerere University Council Chairperson and the entire administration regarding the latter’s directive to hike MUBS’ tuition.
On March 21st, the Makerere University academic registrar wrote a letter to the MUBS administration directing the latter to increase tuition for graduate programmes with effect from the academic year 2108/2019.
According to Prof Baryamureeba, MUBS is financially and administratively autonomous of Makerere University and 100% of MUBS students’ tuition remains in the institution and is meant to run the programmes, something he thinks has nothing to do with the affiliation.
“The communication from Makerere University Council directing MUBS to revise tuition fees to not less than UGX 5Million and 7Million per annum for master’s and PHD programmes respectively, not later than march 26th, 2018 is unlawful and unfortunate,” part of Baryamureeba’s letter to Makerere University council reads.
Prof Baryamureeba also added that experience has taught them that abrupt increase of tuition has always led to strikes by students. In the same letter, Baryamureeba noted that if MUBS is ever going to hike its tuition, it will first undertake consultations before any other step is taken.
With the current fees structure, Baryamureeba also reveals that MUBS has not been able to recruit its desired number of students and the Nakawa based University is not ready to place itself out of market explaining that other Universities charge less than MUBS for the same programmes.
In addition, Baryamureeba also noted that the proposed fees structure is likely to exclude the majority Ugandans earning less than UGX 500,000 per month not forgetting the fact than education should be inclusive.
