Kanungu District Woman Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Elizabeth Karungi on Thursday came to the rescue of over 300 students who were stranded in University hostels, when she freely transported them back to their respective homes in Kanungu.
The students were stuck within Kampala with limited food and supplies following the President’s directive to have all educational Institutions closed in March which was a measure to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Hon Karungi told Campus Bee that she did this following several outcries from the students as they were suffering with life in the city amidst lockdown and the strict measures on the public transport, inclusive of the hiked transport fares.
“I have been receiving numerous calls from the students who were stranded in hostels after the Government closed educational facilities to decongest areas that may ease the spread of coronavirus. So I decided to come to their rescue and get them back to their respective homes in Kanungu.” Hon Karungi said.
The Kanungu MP added that the first batch of students was transported back yesterday using three Parliamentary Minibuses each carrying 35 students.
Hon Karungi added that she will not sit and relax until all the stranded students are taken back to their homes as they wait for the pandemic to be dealt with and schools resume.
