In a significant leap forward for vocational and technical education in Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni has officially granted charter status to the YMCA Comprehensive Institute (YCI). The confirmation of this milestone was made by Dr. James Nkata, the institution’s chancellor, signifying a pivotal moment in the institution’s dedication to providing high-quality, practical skills-based education.

Dr. Herbert Mukasa, the principal of YCI, emphasized the institution’s commitment to delivering education that is not only rigorous but also geared towards equipping students with the skills demanded by today’s job market. The charter status, according to Mukasa, validates YCI’s leadership in vocational and technical education, setting a standard for other institutions offering degrees.

The road to this achievement involved a series of activities, as outlined by Nkata, who expressed gratitude for the President’s decision. Speaking to journalists at the YMCA Wandegeya Campus in Kampala on February 20, 2024, Nkata underscored the significance of this milestone for the entire education sector.

The approval of the university charter was officially conveyed by Prof. Mary Okwakol, the executive director of the National Council of Higher Education, in a letter addressed to the institute’s vice-chancellor. Dated January 29, 2024, the letter was accompanied by a copy of the President’s letter granting the charter, signed on January 11, 2024.

Dr. Mukasa reiterated that this development is a testament to the institution’s unwavering dedication to providing quality, skill-based education. He praised the relentless efforts of both staff and students in ensuring that YCI remains at the forefront of educational excellence.

Roselyne Birungi, chairperson of the YCI governing council, expressed enthusiasm about the future, stating that this achievement will serve as motivation to further elevate standards and expand opportunities for future generations. The charter status, she emphasized, inspires YCI to continue empowering youth and vulnerable groups through education.

With campuses in Kampala and Wakiso district, YCI remains steadfast in its mission of imparting practical skills that empower youth and vulnerable populations.

This charter status not only recognizes YCI’s past accomplishments but also sets a promising path for its future endeavors in education, innovation, and community development. As the institution continues to thrive, it stands as a beacon of excellence in Uganda’s educational landscape.
