Over 30 dance crews turned up at Nsambya Sharing Hall to take part in the Fly Teens’ Break Dance Face Off that went down yesterday Friday, May 10. The competition saw several crews battle it out for a cash prize of UGX 1 Million that was awarded to the overall winner ( Smash Crew), courtesy of FLY UG.
The second winner (Faisal Ddamba aka Mister Magic Feet) walked away with UGX 500,000 after leading the Solo Category while the third got UGX 250,000 after participating in their respective categories like Solo, B-boy and the crew. The competition was strictly a break dance-based thing and several crews showcased their lit skills while jamming to all hip-hop street styles.
While speaking to Campus Bee, the MC of the day Hans Mubangizi, stage name Hans MC revealed that the event was about finding teens who can express themselves through their talents, dancing in particular.
“Today’s event is mainly about finding kids who have the great talent and can express themselves through dance. We went to different communities, we were in Nateete, Kawempe, we toured Kampala City finding kids who can express themselves through dance.” Mubangizi said.
Mubangizi added that so many people do dance competitions, so as FLY, they came up with a concept of majoring in break-dance so that the genre’s lovers can openly “do their thing”. While speaking about upcountry dancers who never got a chance to attend FLY UG’s auditions, Mubangizi clarified that dancers from different parts of the country sent in their videos through social media, and the best ones were included among finalists that graced the Face off.
According to Joy Tushabe, one of the organizers of the event, FLY UG has done contests for almost everything and this particular one was dedicated to dancers in a bid to prevent them from engaging in bad habits such as smoking.
“FLY is always looking for ways of keeping teenagers engaged in positive activities that will deter them from involving in bad habits like smoking. So this contest was particularly for dancers because we’ve done contests for almost everything, music, drama, beat-boxing but this was for dancers basically empowering youths through dance and a contest because we want them to win something at the end of the day. So basically keeping the teens involved doing the things they love.” Tushabe said.
From cheering up their favorite dancers to taking selfies, the fun-filled event yielded moments that teens will reminisce throughout their future, thanks to FLY UG.
