2021 UGC Ladies Open Results
• Winner: Martha Babirye – 79, 78, 74 (231 S/D)
• Runner-up: Peace Kabasweka – 75, 79, 77 (231 Gross)
• 2nd Runner-up: Evah Magala – 239 Gross
Martha Babirye’s winning instincts guided her to the 2021 Uganda Golf Club Ladies Open triumph following her impressive performance at the three-day event which took place at the par 72 Uganda Golf Course in Kitante, Kampala.
Babirye tied with Peace Kabasweka on 231 strokes each in 54 holes played over three rounds before the former exhibited prowess of a typical winner in the 12th hole of the sudden death with her par ousting the latter’s double bogey.
The reigning Uganda Open champion had posted 7-over par 79, 6-over par 78 and 5-over par 77 on the respective three rounds to amass a total of 231 gross mark during the tournament that had National Medical Stores (NMS) as title sponsors.
Babirye, whose counterpart’s scoreboard had 75, 79, 77 for a tiebreak felt energized and believes victory will fine tune her for next week’s Uganda Golf Open in Entebbe where she will be vying to clinch the crown for the third time running.
“My first day wasn’t so good and my second day was fair, actually I’ve been improving everyday until today decided who to win because we were in the pressure group and I had to fight the last hole and that’s why I had a tie up.” a joyful Babirye stated.
“I’m okay with the sudden death because I’ve won it before and it’s like getting a second chance, so I gave it all the best and that’s why I gave it the best because she was doing so well. The tournament has really showed me that I can do it again, I can win the Uganda Open for the third time because most of the players here are going be in Entebbe so I’m happy.”
“I thank National Medical Stores because it’s hard to get sponsors especially these two years where we have had COVID. Companies and individuals are struggling so I thank the main sponsors.” Noted Babirye who felt that Kabasweka is a “very promising golfer just that today, she was so unlucky.”
Over 100 golfers took part in the event whose subsidiary category (professionals) was won by Ronald Rugumayo with 139 gross mark. He joined the Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA) as a result.
While giving his remarks at the famous 19th hole, NMS’ Chief Stores and Operations Officer Paul Okware said they bankrolled this edition due to their commitment to raise awareness about the increasing number of Non-Communicable Diseases.
“We are dedicated to using Sports as a vessel to create awareness about prevention rather than cure by exercising regularly and emphasizing early detection through regular check-ups, we can reduce the number of patients in our hospitals and Ultimately achieve a healthy population.”
Over 100 golfers took part in the four-day tournament which climaxed on Saturday 13th November with an exciting evening of merrymaking.
Lt Col. Dr Henry Kyobe Bbosa presided at the prize giving ceremony as the chief guest representing Health Minister Hon. Jane Ruth Aceng who kindly requested golfers “vaccinate and also spread the word.”
