In a landmark achievement for Ugandan climbing sport, two athletes Jonathan Ssentoogo and Lyndon Nsubuga have clinched coveted spots at the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers for Climbing. The climbers, whose names reverberate through Uganda’s climbing community, have etched their names in the annals of the sport, setting a precedent for future generations of climbers. The dual-qualified at the 2024 Regional Lead Rankings with a record 47.9 (Jonathan Ssentoogo), and 46.91 (Lyndon Nsubuga) in Kigali, Rwanda held in December 2023 and January 2024.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifiers – Climbing ranking events, Lyndon and Jonathan stand a chance to cling places of the 80 men’s quota places of Sport Climbing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. They focus on qualifying for Boulder & Lead (men) places, as the highest-ranked athlete from the Continent.
Climbing is a new Sport on the Olympic Programme, and thus this will be the first edition of climbing at an Olympic Games. Thus, the dual aims to ascent to the pinnacle of competitive climbing at the Paris 2024, underscoring Uganda’s growing prominence in the global climbing arena and exemplifying the spirit of excellence that resonates within the country’s sporting community.
Ranking events are IFSC World Cups, as well as Continental qualification events, all serving as a prestigious platforms for the world’s top climbers to showcase their skills, and qualify for the ‘Paris 2024’ Olympic Games, Uganda’s representation marks a significant milestone in the country’s sporting history.
