We’ve all heard about the new sport that’s hitting the streets recently called cheza and some of you may know it with the local name Kwepena, only that this one is more modernized. I heard the privilege of with it’s founder Simon Peter Tumukunde who is a 2nd year student at MUK doing a Bachelor’s in Information Technology.

How did you come up with the Cheza concept?
I was in an economics lesson back in my form 5, then it hit me that I had never seen kwepena or any other African sport at the Olympics or even a world cup of kwepena /cheza and yet it has so much potential, So we looked into the weakness of the game and why it wasn’t at a global level and worked on that.

Do you partner with anyone at the moment?
Yes, we partner with different companies and organisations and I also have an awesome team that I work with to push the initiative

Are you a registered company?
Yes, We are a registered company so we operate legally.

How does the sport work, how is it played?
Cheza is all about playing the traditional Kwepena  in a more professional manner with rules, limitations like a court, team number, time frame, specific equipment like balls, jerseys, and an organized point basis for game play. It is played in four rounds, between two teams, playing under both point and elimination basis. The first two rounds are played within a limitation of 15 minutes and then the other two also known as the seven stones rounds, are played on elimination whereby if one is hit more than two times, the round ends.

So this is a question from the campus babes, are you dating?
I am single! Yep. Basically, I believe a relationship at this point in my life is not a neccesity even though it is a luxury I can afford.

How well recognized is the Cheza sport at the moment?
The ministry is aware of our operations, they even graced our launch on July 28th last year, we have also been working with the Parliamentary committee on education and sports since January last year. The First lady is also aware of the initiative and we expect to be working with her later on this year.
