The Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwine has dimmed hopes of many university students who had hoped to return back to school after the lockdown is lifted.
There are reports that the current 21-day lockdown that expires tomorrow will be extended further after two Ugandans tested positive with COVID-19. Dr Atwine, while visiting Kisoro Hospital said that reopening schools now will increase the chances of the spread of corona virus as Uganda has only 83 cases and 52 recoveries. There are over 15 million Ugandans in school.
Dr. Atwine who also assessed Covid-19 preparedness at Uganda-Rwanda border of Chanika, Kisoro hospital in Kisoro district, Uganda-Rwanda border of Katuna and Kabale regional referral hospital in Kabale district explained that the government is aware that some schools especially those along the border attract learners from neighboring countries adding that opening them now means that it will give a chances for some people to cross to Uganda.
Meanwhile, will “address the country tonight at 8pm, guiding on the way forward as the 21-day lockdown extension comes to a close tomorrow. I urge you all to continue observing the guidelines from our health experts as the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic continues.”
