The 1st of July, 2021 marked 50 years since Lumumba Hall, a boys’ hall of residence at Makerere University came into existence. If you happened to be at Makerere University in the last five or six years, you also probably encountered a student from the College of Education, and a very notorious strike leader named Simon Wanyera alias the Revolutionary Son.
Whenever the two (Lumumba Hall and Wanyera) would combine, it was always fire on the hill. The staunch supporter of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Dr. Kizza Besigye welcomed a bouncing baby girl today, a blessing from his union with Ms Joan Wambuya Wanyera a former resident of Mary Stuart Hall – also known as Box, with whom Lumumba would combine to make the Lumbox fraternity.
The two met at Makerere University and wedded from Makerere’s St. Francis Chapel. Wanyera, a prominent leader of the deadliest strikes the university has ever faced seems to have a soft spot after all. In a hearty message for his former hall’s anniversary, he congratulate residents and former residents for achieving the feat and holding the hall’s name high amidst all struggles.
“The empire has taken unusual strides to make it to where it is today. Tears of enormous joy cascade down my visage like a faulty tap as I reminisce about the golden years I have shared with my great home. These years have been characterized by ups and downs. Regardless, we have sailed through them as one family. They have been great years of fighting for the rights of a common Ugandan. Fifty great years of championing the rights of a common Makererean.” Wanyera wrote.
“And it goes without saying that our fight over the years has not been in vain. We have registered great victories together and this puts a satisfied smile on our faces. As we celebrate this great anniversary, let us remember our great Father, Patrice Lumumba, whose name our Alma mater is named after for the enormous contribution towards the liberation of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Africa at large. Indeed, your fight left behind amazing fruits and Lumumba Hall is one of those many fruits. Lumumba is home to many of us, Lumumba is family, Lumumba is Uganda summarized.” He added.
While concluding, Wanyera announced that in the early hours of today, his family was blessed with a baby girl whom he will be naming Mary Stuart Gabby Wanyera.
