As Universities and tertiary institutions start re-opening in November, Makerere University Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) – Prof Umar Kakumba has revealed that the institution plans to stagger the return of learners back to campus starting with Final Year students, who in this case had been studying online and will be headed for final examinations.
Prof Kakumba cited a health danger of having everyone returning to campus at once, a move which the institution will manage by the phased physical resumption of classes.
“Allowing everyone back on campus on November 1 will certainly cause a problem. Instead, we shall receive those who had already been studying virtually, including the final bunch of finalists who will report for face-to-face interactions as well as prepare to sit for exams.” Prof Kakumba explained.
He further revealed that upon completion of the exams for the finalists, other groups of classes will be allowed to return for physical campus activity.
Continuing students that the institution completed their online assessments for the semester which was cut short by the closure of schools in June. Finalists kicked off semester two on September 30, whereas the rest of the continuing students start their second semester tomorrow October 4.
