Internship Guide: What to do When You’re not Given Work to Perform at Your Intern Place

Some internship places can be so boring, no work to do and students are left to wonder and loiter around the offices without being allocated any assignments. In some places, you will lie idle at your desk for hours, start thinking about your favorite kikomando joint, doze off every now and then except for the free Wi-Fi maybe that will gradually keep you up.

Well, if your internship is boring, remember some folks are very loaded with work at their internship and go home very tired, so thank God if you are that lazy rat. However, since we are committed to ensuring that you gain the most from your internship placement, here are the things you should do at your intern to keep you engaged when no work has been allocated to you

  1. Ask for work

“Ask and thou shall receive’, you remember that saying? Sometimes your bosses and internship coordinators are too busy to even think about you, they are occupied all the time. At that, they won’t even allocate you work. Just stop being shy, ask for what you must do. That will not only show how serious you are, but also how hardworking you are thus a chance to even be retained in case there is room.

2. Learn something new while there’s no work

If the place has WiFi, why not stream a tutorial on an educational subject of discovery in your field of study? Leave alone soccer videos and telemundo, you can actually keep learning something new in this boredom. Imagine you do that every day, internship will end when you are way smarter and wiser than you were.

3. Show your supervisor you are occupied

Sitting around, whining your waist on your sit with sleep heavy in your eyes will give a bad impression about you. Put on a good face, don’t look bored and lazy. Remember body language tells a lot about you. So, style up and put a smile. Keep pacing around your computer looking for things or flip those files now and then. Just find something to do to occupy yourself remember that an idle mind is a workshop of the devil.

4. Engage in meaningful discussions with your friends and colleagues

Not everyone can be free at this time but you can gather around the common room to discuss a certain educational topic as internees. Remember to make your supervisors aware of this. Discuss with classmates and workmates issues pertaining to work there; be willing to listen and learn. Avoid engaging in cheap gossip about premier league, tobacco smoking or chats about those boys trying to vibe you. Focus on your intern and please try to keep off your phone. Using your phone isn’t a bad thing but sticking to it and almost wanting to swallow it will give your supervisors or bosses a bad impression of you as a phone addict.
