Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) has donated a village ambulance to Nnindye Health Centre, Mpigi, as part of its community engagement programs. The handover ceremony was presided over by the University Vice Chancellor Rev. Prof. John Chrysostom Maviiri on Wednesday 27th January 2016 who was accompanied by his deputy Dr. Joseph Kisekka and other members of staff.
The Ambulance is a motorbike ambulance that was built and delivered to the University by PULSE Village Ambulance on behalf of Kevin Heneghan, a friend of the Ford program at the University of Notre Dame who are part of the Community outreach programs at UMU.
This donation follows conversations with the Nnindye community facilitated by the UPFORD team on health needs of the community members at a visit during March 2015.
Speaking during the function, the Vice Chancellor encouraged the community members to make proper use of the Ambulance and visit the health centre whenever necessary as one way of improving their health. He called upon all community members to work together in fighting teenage pregnancies that are affecting the girl child and be cautious in everything they do.
The Local Council Chairperson Mr. Lwanyaga Vincent who received the Ambulance on behalf of the community expressed gratitude to Uganda Martyrs University for the continued support to the health centre and the community at large.
UMU in partnership with the University of Notre Dame’s Ford Family program in Human Development Studies have over the past 6 years provided support to Nnindye Health centre and Village teams with the aim of improving health service delivery.
