Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine has come out to appreciate Makerere University female students for spearheading a strike against the university’s move to hike tuition. Using his social media platforms, the Kyadondo East legislator also condemned the military’s actions against these students.
Bobi Wine also condemned the university’s move to suspend and issuing warning letters to some of the students involved in yesterday’s demonstration.
“For starters, I must salute the courage of these young women. It gives me great pleasure to see women rise up to speak for social justice. This is evidence that our struggle has come of age- dictatorship and bad governance are in trouble.” Bobi Wine wrote.
“In the same manner, I condemn the violent crackdown of a peaceful demonstration by unarmed students who are only expressing their frustration with an unfair and oppressive policy. It is not a crime to peacefully demonstrate! It is a right! Our struggle is about restoring fundamental human rights, as well as ensuring social justice for all citizens.” Bobi Wine’s post reads further.
Over 50 students were yesterday arrested following their involvement in a demonstration against the new tuition policy most of which were female students. It is reported that two students have already been suspended by the university while others are in panic following the warning letters received from the university management.
It should be recalled that the university council last year approved a cumulative increment for five years. According to the policy, each student will be required to pay 75 percent more after five years.
