In a televised address today – September 22, President Museveni has directed universities and tertiary institutions to reopen on November 1, this year basing on the roadmap designed by the education ministry.
Schools including primary and secondary levels will be re-opened next year 2022, after a given percentage of priority age groups are vaccinated. The age groups include Parents, Teachers, and school support staff.
“Post-secondary institutions of learning to open with effect from November 1st on condition that all teachers and non-teaching staff are vaccinated” Museveni’s speech read.
In the same address, Universities have been conditioned to prioritize vaccination as a pre-condition before students, lecturers, non-teaching/support staff are allowed back to campus. These can be vaccinated across the country at different health centres.
In an interview with NBS today, the spokesperson of Education Ministry – Dr Dennis Mugimba revealed that learners will be able to move to the next class before the end of the academic year 2020/2021 to save the sector from a dead year.
“Every learner will move to the next class. We are not planning on a dead year, the P1s will move to P2, the P2s will move to P3. Children of 6 years will join P1,” Dr. Mugimba said.
