On Saturday, all the seven Gulu University Guild presidential contestants returned their nomination forms in flair and swag. Maybe I should correctly say “some candidates.”
The excitement among students at the nomination site was palpable, eagerly waiting to see the who is who of this race. It wasn’t long before the first candidate to be nominated, Ms. Alonyo Dolphine turned up. This resilient lady of steel came footing, with no public address system but with a fairly sizeable crowd of adoring supporters. After nomination by the electoral commission, she simply walked away because she couldn’t muster up the voice to address such a huge audience minus a PA system.
Next was Mr. Amati Herbert Asizua the People Power candidate. Well, he came with a scattered fan base but unlike the previous candidate, he afforded a functional music system. He, as usual, took the crowds through People Power chants and his supporters, most of whom were clad in the red PP colours jubilated endless by the end of the exercise.
Mr. Ayiiko Herbert, the recently declared FDC candidate stormed campus with a resounding PA system and a crazy crowd mostly composed of juicy babes who kept dancing in very provoking ways. Many bulls were left swallowing saliva endlessly and wondering why the hell nominations were held during day time!
Following Mr. Ayiiko was the NRM candidate, Mr Lapyem Thomas who surprised many when he came in green colours instead of the expected yellow. He sauntered in with a fairly huge crowd something that wasn’t expected of a ruling party candidate in such times.
Following nomination, the candidate was warmly welcomed by his supporters who however drowned out his speech and nothing in his manifesto was heard expect the greetings. Some students were heard inquiring if the vuvuzela noise was the manifesto of Lapyem Thomas.
Mr. Mukoswa Jacob who was initially thought of as the Mabirizi of this race surprised many when he came in with a decent crowd and after nomination gave a fairly decent address to the audience.
Last but not least came the two Mabirizi’s of this race, Mr. Shadiq Ssempijja and Mr. Yiga John Ivan. These two great sons of Gulu University came in with a paltry number of supporters and funny public address systems. However, Mr Yiga redeemed himself with an arousing speech which left many a supporter rooting for him.
