It is almost a month since students at Makerere University resumed studies for this academic year and things are not as beautiful as they may seem on the outside.
The students, most of whom reside in halls of residence inside the university, have had to brave hunger for all this time after their government food allowances spent longer than they should take to reach them.
It should be noted that after the banning of food supply within the university, government agreed to remit about shs 8,000 to every student everyday for their breakfast, lunch and supper.
Now exclusive reports from the university inform us that some students have not even received a penny from the government as their upkeep. “Our parents know that we are government students. They don’t give us any money for food. How does Nawangwe expect us to survive?” one student inquired.
Campus Bee has been informed that some students have received their allowances but the majority are yet to receive a penny, including the freshers who are only seeing this kind of life for the first time.
The university administration and government had pledged to always remit the said sums before the semester begins to ensure that the students get the money in time to move about with their activities.
