Makerere University students have appealed to the Dr Abel Rwendeire Commission investigating Makerere affairs to also look into the expenditures of the student guild leadership as they come up with a comprehensive report on what has been causing mayhem at Uganda’s oldest institution of higher learning and in particular financial management.
The Guild leadership was thrown into a pit when it was last year reported that they had budgeted over Shs 120 millions for snacks and drinks.
While raising the issue, former guild aspirant Simon Ssenyonga said the committee shouldn’t just look at contributing to Literature while drafting the report but should also go deep into affairs and find out how even the students’ guild spends money allocated to them.
The university guild president Roy Ssembogga, while reacting on the above, said that much as every sector of the university needs to be looked into, students should appreciate that sometimes figures are blown out of proportion.
“Honestly, do you believe that Shs 120million can be spent on snacks? How big would such a pizza be?” Ssembogga wondered.
Students further asked the committee to unearth invisible hands within the university that fuel student strikes so as to fulfill personal interest and urged them to make sure that their report doesn’t just get merely stuffed up in shelves but the recommendations worked on.
Rwendeire assured students that they will work around the clock to have their recommendations implemented.
All this happened at the inauguration of the students’ guild forums, a brainchild of the resigning guild prime minister Jotham Burubuto.
The forums, which will happen regularly and with subsequent guilds, were officially launched by Democratic Party (DP) Vice Chairman and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Hon. Mukasa Mbidde.
Mbidde is also a former guild president of Makerere.
