Kabale University’s teaching and non-teaching staff took to the streets of the campus in protest and demonstration of a six month long drought without pay. While demonstrating, the staff matched through the university campus as they closed all offices and lecture rooms demanding for their salaries, switched off the university generator, closed doors of all the offices and their university library.
The disgruntled staff are seeking to be cleared of all unpaid arrears for the last six months and also remain unclear of their status of employment at the university.
“Although they were made to write application letters in order to be considered for the validation exercise, they have not been considered for a formal employment status,” noted Emmanuel Nkundizana, the University Academic Staff Association Chairperson.
The angry staff blocked all the access roads leading to their university with barbed wires and also locked all the university vehicles inside the university, before closing the university main gate.
These activities attracted the likes of anti-riot police commanded by head of the Kabale Field Force Unit ASP Henry Kisembo to calm the situation and talk to the staff.
The non-teaching staff across majority public university are up in arms with government over delayed payments and this has caused delay in official opening of public universities.
