Kabale University, which recently became a public university, on Friday saw its students and lecturers take to the streets of Mbarara to strike.
The students were demonstrating against the poor medical facilities, delay of last semester’s results, while the lecturers were striking against delayed salaries. They claim they have not been paid for eight months.
Due to those grievances, students and their lecturers marched from the campus up to the district headquarters to meet the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), but unfortunately, he was out of office. but they were able 2 meet the Deputy RDC
The students were, however, able to meet the Deputy RDC, Mr Denis Nzeirwe who tried to calm the furious students but in vain.
After fruitless negotiations, he lost his temper and beat up Kabale University Human Rights President, Nicolas Byonanebye. Fracas ensued as students were baying for the deputy RDC’s blood for thumping their own.
Police intervened and sprayed teargas to disperse the rowdy students. Police arrested 15, including the three lecturers and were taken to Kabale Central Police Station.
They were later released at 7pm, Friday evening.
Since Friday, the university remained closed as lecturers and students boycotted the campus until their grievances have been fully settled. The Deputy RDC has promised to meet with the Education Minister and First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni. Until, students and lecturers are adamant on resuming studies.
We shall keep you posted.
