Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnaba Nawangwe has ordered the university’s Director Internal Audit, Walter Yorac Nono to kick off an audit into the ongoing on-campus lectures for freshers and science students.
In a letter dated 2nd March addressed to Yorac, Nawangwe ordered that the university management resolved to conduct a daily audit of teaching and learning activities at the university.
“in order to ensure effective execution of the university timetable, management has resolved to undertake a daily audit of teaching and learning activities at the university. The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to request you to undertake the said audit,” Nawangwe’s letter reads in part.
The letter is aimed at identifying lecturers who are on strike as earlier announced by the Forum for Academic Staff of Public Universities of Uganda (FASPU) to go on strike starting last 6th February 2021. All academic staff in public universities decided to withdraw their labour until UGX 129.24bn for full enhancement of salaries of staff from senior lecturers and below in all public universities is released.
Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi, the FASPU chairperson recently called upon all lecturers to remain united and refuse to be intimidated by their respective administration heads.
Makerere University kicked off online studies for continuing students on 8th February but up to now students haven’t studied. The university recently reopened for freshers and continuing science students but according to information coming in, no lecturer had stepped in class by press time.
