The Nawangwe sharp axe rolls again at Makerere University. The latest reaching Campus Bee confirms that Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the Makerere University Vice Chancellor has suspended three lecturers over alleged sexual harassment of female students.
The suspended lecturers include; Vincent Ssajjabi, an assistant lecturer in the School of Economics, Medard Twinobuhungiro, an assistant lecturer in the School of Business and Jackson Sekiryango from School of Languages, Literature and Communication.
“The committee set up to investigate these cases has completed and submitted a report on Mr Medard Twinobuhungiro and Mr Jackson Sekiryango while investigations on Mr Vincent Ssajjabi are still on-going. Management is studying the report and will handle in accordance with the Policy and Regulations against Sexual Harassment of Makerere University,” Nawangwe said.
The trio adds to the many suspended officals of the state-owned university in addition to several complaints from students who accuse their male lecturers of tirelessly asking for sex in exchange for academic related favors.
It should be recalled that in a report released in 2018, the investigation of sexual harassment at Makerere University discovered several reasons that boost this vice among which include; socioeconomic status, the superior power of lecturers over students, lecturer-student relations, among others.
Among the unforgettable recent cases of sexual harassment at Makerere include assistant lecturer Twinobuhungiro who was was recorded by a student demanding for sex or else he was going to set a hard exam to fail her at the expense of failing the entire class. Edward Kisuze also made headlines last year when he was recorded feasting on a student’s private parts while in office.
