Phionah Nagaba , a third-year Makerere University student who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering has reached out to the general public for financial help. According to her tearful story, Nagaba’s mother died in 2012 when she was only 13 years and her father, who has been her only help was arrested in Dubai last year over unclear reasons.
“I am the eldest amongst four siblings. My mum died in 2012 when i was 13 years old, since then my dad has been my everything not only emotionally but also financially.” Her story reads in part.
“In January last year 2018 my dad was arrested in Dubai for reasons I still do not understand and from that time I have been struggling to support myself and my siblings to the extent of even selling our assets like cows and the hardware shop where we were getting money to pay tuition and buy basic needs.” The story reads further.
After selling all the property they owned in a bid to support her siblings and herself, Nagaba has been struggling to pay her tuition at Makerere University. The situation worsened when she lost her job last semester in addition to losing her personal documents to money lenders.
The confused Nagaba was recently kicked out of Kann Hostel for failing to clear hostel fees and she feels there is no other way she could get the money for both tuition and accommodation. It is from this worst experience that Nagaba has decided to reach out to the general public for help because she cannot sit for her end of semester exams that are slated to kick off on Monday, November 18.
“Last semester the situation worsened. I lost the ka job I had and I had to give out my academic documents, national id and laptop to the money lenders to get the full tuition for last semester.” Nagaba wrote.
“All my property I came with to campus were confiscated at KANN Hostel because I failed to raise the accommodation fee. I had hope that my dad would be released soon which has not happened yet, that’s why I am requesting for help at the last minute because I am having a paper on Monday 18th and I haven’t received any.”
Nagaba has further vowed to work out next semester if a good Samaritan helps her to clear tuition for the current semester.
“If I can get this semester’s tuition, if only I can get this semester’s tuition, I promise God and my mother I’ll work out a way for next semester.
