Makerere University Guild President Julius Kateregga is being detained in a Safe House, Campus Bee has learned. The People Power associate was picked up last week from NBS TV where he had gone for a talk show on tuition increment.
Kateregga along with other members of the students’ guild had been engaged in a week’s demonstration over the 15% tuition increment at the university which the student argue is unfair to the financially disadvantaged.
Ever since he was arrested, Kateregga had not communicated, however he took to his twitter account and said “I am in safe hands and I will tell you what happened. Our fight is alive until we have been heard.”
“From east, west, north and south, all voices singing arise Makerere rise up and rise, high up and high all voices singing arise Makerere. This is our solemn inspiration to build for the future therefore the struggle continues.” Kateregga said, quoting a verse from the Makerere University anthem.
Kateregga talked to President Museveni on phone last week and was directed to hold a meeting with the university council to solve their grievances but the meeting didn’t end well after the council maintained the increase and the students wanted it scrapped entirely.
